Enjoy these places while you can. Twenty five years ago we drove to a bay called Malcolm Roads on the north-western tip of Provo in the Turks & Caicos islands. It was a hardcore 4x4 assault course and my wife urged me to turn back several times, but there were no turning paces. When we got there, we were the only people on the beach all day. The other day, I was watching some old family videos of our kids snorkelling in the shockingly clear water and decided to find it on Google Earth. There's a resort there now with over 200 condos and villas and tennis courts - the works. To quote Joni Mitchel ''They paved paradise, put up a parking lot''

Sorry to hear you had your stuff stolen. It's the kind of thing that can ruin a vacation, but it can happen to anyone, even the most experienced traveller. We've been coming to Antigua for over ten years and have only had one incident when a guy came into the garden of our villa in the middle of the night and stole ... the Ring video door bell. The owner was alerted (she was in Italy at the time) and called the Falmouth dock police, who were there in a few minutes. Because the door bell sent a video clip to the owner, she Whatsapped the clip to several local people who recognised the guy and he was arrested, charged and imprisoned for 12 months. I always carry laminated photocopies of passport and driver licence with me, but put the originals and larger sums of cash and bank / credit cards in a safe wherever we stay. A friend of mine had a video camera grabbed from a picnic table, while he was sat right next to it. I gave chase but the thief was a teenager and had a hundred yard head start and 45 years advantage on me. That was in Tobago and the police did nothing, but write down his contact details on the back of a grocery till receipt, as it was the only piece of paper they could find 😂

We are heading to Antigua for the month of January for the very first time. I have read that there is a recent wave of crime. I was sad to read that as in my research of where to go, Antigua came up as very safe. I appreciate these tips to help me think of what not to do. My hubby never gets in the water but sits and reads. BUT I for sure will put the car keys, drivers licenses, money etc in his pocket and not in a bag. I am thinking for our actual bag, I may now research a small type of strap with a lock and secure it to my hubby's chair. They cannot just grab the bag if it is secured to the chair. It may deter a bit. I had thought we would join the cruise ship crowds as my thought is safety in numbers but maybe not? I am not looking forward to the driving thing down there as I read nothing good about it. But for a month we are surely not going to take the taxi everywhere for that time period.

I visited Antigua a few times in '91. Runaway Beach was my favorite. There was a little restaurant called the Lobster Pot or Shack? It was very quiet and relaxing, just beautiful.

Could not find you on other media. Wanted to give you a tip. But this must do. As veteran traveller to the Dominican republic I earned this fast: In future, load up an earthquake app on your phone. Set the sensitivity to high. This way, whenever your phone is jostled it will sound an alarm. Clearly you would not have it active all the time. But if you set it down while in public traffic, (bars, palapas, etc.), turn it on & the alarm startles the would-be thief. I even turn mine on at night in my room, in case someone comes into the room. Great burglar/intruder alarm. And guess what? It works in the event of an earthquake too! Who knew?
